Russian Presidential grants for first year BA students at Russian universities have been awarded for the first time for the 2015/2016 academic year. HSE students were among the top recipients.
In December 2015, the Russian President signed a directive ‘On State Support Measures for People Who Display Outstanding Talent’. This set up a system of grants worth 20,000 roubles per month for prospective students with outstanding performance at school (in national Olympiads, sporting competitions, major musical contests, etc) who are applying for state-funded places at Russian universities. Applications for grants were submitted to three ministries – Education and Science, Culture, and Sport.
The grants are paid throughout the full term of education, and there is only one condition – that the grant recipient stays in Russia for 5 years following the completion of their BA.
Over 800 people applied for the first grants. 52 HSE students on 16 different BA courses ranging from Oriental Studies to Applied Mathematics and Informatics received Presidential grants. In terms of the number of students awarded grants, HSE is one of Russia’s top universities.
