A total of eight Russian universities are included in the 2017 U.S. News Best Global Universities rankings, and six of them are participants of the 5-100 Excellence Project. The number of subject rankings including the 5-100 project universities has increased to four (last year there was only one subject – Physics). The best results among the ‘newbies’ were demonstrated by HSE, which entered the Top-200 in Mathematics, and by MIPT (238th in Physics).
U.S. News, an American media corporation, publishes a global university ranking evaluating all fields of activity, as well as rankings in 22 subjects. Rankings by subject areas are not linked to university departments, but rather evaluate the academic achievements of an entire university in a given field. For example, the 2017 Ranking in Mathematics takes into account all publications by university researchers made between 2010 and 2014 and indexed in the Web of Science database.
